High School Football Scores 10/31 – Sandhills/Thedford and SEM Advance to State Quarterfinals
Sandhills/Thedford vs Anselmo-Merna

In an all area matchup, Anselmo-Merna faced Sandhills/Thedford in round two of the Class D2 state football playoffs. The two met back in week one of the season with AM winning 36-34. This time the result was reversed with Sandhills/Thedford hanging on for a 28-20 win.
Sandhills/Thedford jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind two touchdown runs by Maurice Robinson. Anselmo-Merna got on the board with 4:57 left in the 2nd quarter when Dane Duryea scored on a 4 yard touchdown run to make the score 14-8. Sandhills/Thedford stretched the lead back to two possessions when Maurice Robinson scored his third rushing touchdown of the night with less than a minute remaining in the first half to put the Knights up 22-8 at halftime. Anselmo-Merna came out strong in the second half scoring on their opening drive of the 3rd quarter and then closed to within 22-20 when Dane Duryea hooked up with Jackson Christen for a 4 yard touchdown pass on fourth down to
start the 4th quarter. Sandhills/Thedford quickly responded when Maurice Robinson broke loose for a 40 yard touchdown run, his fourth of the game, to put the Knights back up by eight. The Sandhills/Thedford defense held Anselmo-Merna scoreless the rest of the game to preserve the win. Robinson finished with just over 200 yards rushing for Sandhills/Thedford and Dane Duryea finished with just over 150 yards rushing for Anselmo-Merna. Sandhills/Thedford advances to the state quarterfinals next week to face St. Mary’s of O’Neill.  St. Mary’s defeated Burwell Friday 46-6. Anselmo-Merna concludes its season at 8-2. Twin Loup traveled to Trenton on Friday to face undefeated Hitchcock County in round two of the Class D2 state football playoffs. The Wolves scored first on a 21 yard field goal from Carter Hall to go up 3-0. The score stayed that way until Hitchcock County recovered a Twin Loup fumble and returned it for a touchdown to go up 8-3. The Falcons extended their lead to 16-3 but Twin Loup closed the gap when Yahya Harris connected with Carter Hall on a 6 yard touchdown pass to make the score 16-10 where the score remained going into the half. In the third quarter, Hitchcock County scored on special teams blocking a Twin Loup punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown to go up 24-10 which would end up being the final score. The Wolves had scoring opportunities in the second half but Hitchcock County’s defense was able to make the stops when needed including a goal line stand on 4th down and goal from the one yard line. Twin Loup concludes the season at 6-4. Hitchcock County advances to the quarterfinals where they will face Wynot. Wynot defeated Mullen on Friday 64-13. The Broncos conclude their season at 8-2 overall.

In six man football, SEM advanced to the quarterfinals with an impressive 62-14 win over Potter-Dix. SEM will face Southwest in the next round. Southwest advanced with a 60-6 win over Lewiston. The two teams met during the regular season with Southwest winning 65-30.
