Girls basketball district final matchups set

Broken Bow, Sandhills/Thedford, and Sumner-Eddyville-Miller were among the girls basketball teams named into district final matchups taking place across the state next Friday February 23.

Broken Bow is a six seed in the C1-6 district final. Their opponent is eleven seed Battle Creek, who will bring their 17-5 record into Broken Bow to face the Indians.

The Bravettes are coming off of a C1-8 sub district championship that saw them defeating Boone Central by sixteen and Pierce (15-10) in a tight matchup with a final score of 35-30. Sami Wemhoff leads Battle Creek, putting in around 11 points per game while pulling down just under 9 rebounds each contest.

Broken Bow comes into the C1-6 district final via wildcard after falling to Holdrege (12-11) in the C1-10 sub district semifinals by two points. Season highlights attributing to the point standings earning the Indians their district final spot include a 9 point victory over Adams Central (19-5) in December and an 18 point win over Gothenburg (19-5) in mid January.

The Broken Bow and Battle Creek game will be broadcast on KCNI 96.3 FM as well as KCNI1280.com, and the free KCNI app.

Sandhills/Thedford (20-4) will host the D2-5 district final in Dunning as the five seed. The High Plains Community Storm (16-8) will head to the sandhills as the twelve seed.

The Storm earned a position one win away from state by winning the D2-3 sub district, which ended with a victory over Nebraska Lutheran (8-11) by a score of 50-42. The Storm are led by sophomore Peyton Hofmann who scores just over 10 points per game, while securing nearly six rebounds per contest. Fellow sophomore Gahvrielle Lesiak puts up 8 points per game.

Sandhills/Thedford took care of business in the D2-8 sub district with victories over Ansley/Litchfield and Anselmo-Merna. The Knights have won nine of their last ten while securing an MNAC tournament championship in that same stretch.
