Friday Football Area Preview

It’s the first big football Friday of the season.  The Broken Bow Indians will kick off their season tonight as they travel out west to face Chadron.  Carlie Wells enters his fifth season as Broken Bow head coach.  The Indians are coming off a 2023 season that saw them advance to the Class C1 state quarterfinals.  Each year is a transition as players graduate to give way to those who have waited their turn.  Speaking at the Broken Bow athletic booster club falls sports kickoff this week, coach Wells said the offensive system will change some to fit the talent and ability of this year’s team.

“It’ll change some.  Probably won’t see us in the “Maryland I” quite as much but we’re still going to run option.  We’re still going to do that part of the game.  That’s something that will never go away from what I do but you can run that out of multiple sets.  So it won’t be our primary.  You’ll probably see three main sets and then another one as we progress we just gotta get a little bit better at a couple of areas of that and then we can do some things out of that set.  That “Maryland I” we’ll still run it.  I told our coaches the other night even though we haven’t practiced as much in it or spent as much time in it we still feel comfortable in the Maryland I set in what we do.  We’ll have other sets that will probably be our primary set.”

Tonight’s game between Broken Bow and Chadron will be broadcast on KCNI 96.3 FM and kcni1280.com.  Coverage begins with the Custer Federal State Bank pregame show at 6 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. central time.

Today’s area football game of the week on KBBN radio features a six man battle between SEM and Ansley/Litchfield.  It’s the first year in six man football for the A/L Spartans. Head coach Kurt Kulhanek talked about the transition of moving to six man football.

“It’s a little different.  You might have to match up man to man like basketball.  Or if you have the talent to do it you can play a little zone.  That’s the biggest adjustment right there.  Are you going to line up zone, are you going to matchup zone?  What are you going to do here what are you going to do there?  That will be the biggest adjustment for us.”

SEM claimed the six man state football championship in 2023 finishing the season undefeated.  Coach Shane Hrasky talked about the mindset of this year’s team coming off a state championship run last year

“Yeah it’s something we’ve never done before and we talked about it all year long but that was the ultimate goal to win state.  This year is a little different.  Day one told them you can’t have a big head about it.  Everybody’s 0-0, brand new year, start all over.  Same goals, come ready to work and hope we can accomplish the goal.”

Today’s game between SEM and Ansley/Litchfield will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  Coverage begins with the Consolidated pregame show at 2 p.m. with kickoff scheduled for 3.  Other area games scheduled for today include:
Twin Loup vs St. Mary’s
Arcadia/Loup City vs Hi-Line
Mullen at Sandhills Valley
Burwell vs Elgin Public Pope John
