Fall Sports Preview – Ansley/Litchfield Football

The Ansley/Litchfield football team will look to improve on a 2-6 record from a year ago. Ansley/Litchfield head coach Kurt Kulhanek took time to visit with KCNI/KBBN radio about the upcoming season. Coach Kulhanek said there is always a feel of excitement when a new season approaches

“We’re always excited to get started, but then about that third week of practice you’re starting to get ready for a game and you’re getting a little impatient, but yeah, it’s always good when you’ve had all summer you know you got weight lifting and all that but you’re always ready to get going”

Coach Kulhanek said that numbers are down this year with just 13 suiting up this season. He said the low number is not
because boys are not going out but because the overall boy enrollment number is low right now in both Ansley and Litchfield. With the low number, Kulhanek said that avoiding injuries and having players in shape will be key to their success this season.

“Sometimes in practice, that’s the worst thing, you have to be careful in tackling drills.  They do get so many more reps which is a great thing for conditioning but the biggest concern is injuries and and then, obviously, you have to have them in shape.”

The Spartans will be blessed with strong leadership from a group of eight seniors. Kulhanek talked about his eight seniors and their roles this season.

“We have a lot of skill players coming back.  We got Luke Bailey, he’s going to be solid.  Zach Loy is moving to quarterback this year.  Ashton Behmerwold, he played fullback last year.  Jacob Heapy is stepping in to the center spot.  Owen Cunningham is coming back as well and Brian Bailey, Kaden Stunkel, Dillon Haines, they’re all seniors.  We are going to look to lean on Ashton a lot and Luke.  Zach is going to be a good smart quarterback.  He played quarterback in junior high and then we had to move him to center in high school.  I know that sounds crazy but that’s where we’re at.”

Ansley/Litchfield will play in the D2-7 district with Central Valley, Elm Creek, Twin Loup, Burwell, and Overton. The Spartans open their season August 25th when they host Ravenna. Ansley/Litchfield will be featured on KBBN radio when they
host Anselmo-Merna on September 1st and when they travel to Twin Loup on September 22nd.
