The fall sports season begins in a big way today around the KCNI/KBBN coverage area.

The Broken Bow volleyball team begins its season today at Hershey. Speaking at the Broken Bow athletic booster club fall sports kickoff this week, head coach Skylar Morris said she is excited to start the season.
“Yeah, I’m excited for it. A year ago I don’t think I would have said that. I think I would have been a little hesitant, their nerves. I’m excited to walk out on the court on Thursday. It’s because of them and what they’ve been working toward and their excited for it.”
Tonight’s match between Broken Bow and Hershey will be broadcast on KCNI 96.3 FM and kcni1280.com. The varsity match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Other area volleyball matchups scheduled for today include:
Ansley/Litchfield triangular with Elm Creek and Amherst
Twin Loup vs Stuart
Arcadia/Loup City at Wood River
Anselmo-Merna at Sandhills/Thedford
Sandhills Valley at Maywood triangular with Paxton and Maywood Hayes Center

In area football, Sandhills/Thedford hosts Anselmo-Merna tonight in Dunning. S/T is coming off a championship season in 2023 winning the Class D2 state title. Speaking at the Custer County Chief fall sports media bash, returning all state quarterback Kyle Cox talked about the mindset of this year’s team following the jubilation of winning it all a season ago.
“I mean mostly I feel like we just look at it using that state championship as not satisfying our team but just pushing us to want to just work and get that back. I don’t know ever since the day after the state championship we’ve just been looking forward to the next one. We are ready to crack some pads.”
The Anselmo-Merna football team advanced to the second round of the Class D2 playoffs last season and will look to build on that success this year. The Coyotes have just 14 players on the squad this year. Speaking at the AM athletic booster club fall sports kickoff earlier this month, head coach Troy Gilligan talked about the challenges that presents in practice but also about the positive of all players getting numerous reps in practice.
“(Assistant) coach (Spencer) Goodman and I kind of talked – How do you do first team and second team? You need 16 guys. (But) the main thing or the pro to this is there’s 14 guys and you get a lot of reps. Each kid gets plenty and plenty of reps during the day. You get to see more and more opportunities for these kids, more opportunities to get better. But there’s always the down side. You want more kids especially for the JV aspect. You want to play those games just so these younger guys have an opportunity to get on the field.”
Tonight’s game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Other area games scheduled for today include:
South Loup vs Hemingford
Gothenburg at Ogallala
