District Wrestling This Weekend

Area athletes will attempt to qualify for the 2023 NSAA state wrestling championships this weekend as they compete in district wrestling tournaments around the state. Broken Bow will be among the teams competing at the C-4 district meet at Mitchell. Joining Broken Bow at the district meet will be Amherst, Centura, Chase County, Gibbon, Gordon-Rushville, Hershey, Kearney Catholic, Loomis/Bertrand, Mitchell, Morrill, Ord, Red Cloud/Blue Hill, Valentine, West Holt, and Wood River. The Broken Bow wrestling program has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years, including their third Class C state duals championship which they achieved this past weekend, but you have to go back to 1988 for the last time Broken Bow claimed a district team championship. It’s a drought that Broken Bow would like to see end this weekend but head coach Ed Schaaf told Central Nebraska’s Sports Source that it won’t be easy.

Several area teams will compete this weekend at the D-2 district meet which will be held at Southern Valley High School.  Among the teams competing will be Anselmo-Merna, Ansley/Litchfield, Arcadia/Loup City, Burwell, Sandhills Valley, Sandhills/Thedford, SEM and Twin Loup.  South Loup will compete at the D-1 district at Pender and Mullen will compete at the D-4 district at Sutherland.  Cozad will wrestle at the B-3 district at Northwest in Grand Island and Gothenburg will be at the B-4 district meet in Ogallala.  District tournaments begin on Friday and conclude on Saturday.  The top four place winners from each weight class in each district will qualify for the state wrestling championships which take place February 16-18 at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

Central Nebraska’s Sports Source will be live at the C-4 district meet on Saturday where matches are scheduled to begin at 10:30 am central time.  Listen to live coverage of all Broken Bow matches as well as updates from other districts on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.
