The SEM volleyball team advanced to the Class D1 state volleyball championship tournament by claiming the D1-7 district championship on Saturday. SEM won in straight sets over Nebraska Christian to claim the district title. The Lady Mustangs dominated the opening set winning 25-9. The second set was much tighter but SEM was able to win it 25-22. SEM took control midway through the third and won the set 25-14 to complete the sweep. The win marks back to back district championships and a second straight state tournament appearance for SEM. The Class D1 state tournament begins Thursday November 2nd with the state quarterfinals to be played at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. SEM will face St. Mary’s of O’Neill at 3 pm
Joining SEM in the Class D1 state tournament field will be Burwell. The Lady Longhorns advanced with a straight set win over Johnson Brock 25-23, 25-18, 25-12. Burwell’s state opponent will be top seed Guardian Angels Central Catholic. Match is scheduled for 1 pm on Thursday.
Gothenburg advanced to the Class C1 state tournament next week with a straight set win over Chadron 25-15, 25-17, 25-14. The Class C1 state tournament begins Wednesday November 1st in Lincoln. Gothenburg’s opponent at state will by Platteview. Match is scheduled for 3 pm.
Sandhills/Thedford came up just short in their bid to make the state tournament in Class D2. The Knights fell to Central Valley 3 sets to 1. Central Valley won the first set 25-17 but S/T fought back and tied the match winning set 2 25-17. Central Valley regained the lead winning the pivotal third set 25-14 and then held off S/T in the fourth 25-19 to win the match. Central Valley advances to the D2 state tournament. The Lady Knights conclude the season with an overall record of 25-7.
