The first go round of the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded with the Wednesday morning performance in Gillette, Wyoming.
Recapping some of the highlights for team Nebraska in the opening go round. Area cowboy Coy Johnston of Stapleton is in the top five of the steer wrestling. Johnston posted a time of 4.65 on his first run which has him sitting 4th overall in the standings. Johnston is scheduled to make his second run during the Friday night performance of the finals. T.C. Hughson of Morrill Nebraska is 8th in the steer wrestling standings after the first go.
Anna Clark of Thedford is in the top ten of the barrel racing standings after the first go. Clark posted a time of 17.441 on her first run which has her sitting 6th overall. Clark is scheduled to make her second run in the Thursday morning performance.
Team Nebraska has three cowgirls in the top 15 of the breakaway roping standings after the first go round. Kieley Walz of Ainsworth is the leader posting the fastest time in the opening go round at 1.97 seconds. Area cowgirl Jace Hurlburt currently sits in a tie for 13th with an opening time of 2.5 seconds and Makayla Wray of Ord is tied for 15th after posting a time of 2.51 seconds.
Others from team Nebraska who are in the top 15 of their respective event after the first go include Reagan McIntyre of Grand Island who sits 13th in the goat tying and Tate Talkington of Scottsbluff is 14th in the tie down roping.
In the team standings, Nebraska is 6th in the girls standings after the first go round and is tied for 13th in the boys standings. Nebraska is 7th in the combined standings after the first go. Texas leads the team standings in all three categories going into the second go round.
