The Burwell Longhorns improved to 2-1 on the season holding off Sandhills/Thedford Thursday night in Dunning 54-38. The two teams combined for over 800 yards of total offense. Sandhills/Thedford jumped out to a 14-0 lead as Maurice Robinson scored on touchdown runs of 20 and 2 yards. Burwell came back with 14 unanswered points to tie the game with 6:14 left in the 2nd quarter. The teams then went back and forth combining for 40 total points in the final six minutes of the 1st half with Burwell taking a 38-30 lead into halftime. With 8:52 left in the third quarter Sandhills/Thedford’s Maurice Robinson hooked up with Carter Anderson for a 40 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 38-38. That would be the last time Sandhills/Thedford would score. Burwell’s Binyam Sikes scored on a one yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the 4th quarter to put Burwell back in front 46-38. With 5:30 remaining in the game, Burwell converted on 4th down from just outside the S/T 10 yard line as Binyam Sikes connected with Drew Dawe on a touchdown pass to extend Burwell’s lead to 54-38 and send the Longhorns to its second win of the season.
Burwell’s Binyam Sikes finished with four rushing touchdowns and two touchdown passes and Drew Dawe had two touchdown runs for the Longhorns. Maurice Robinson of Sandhills/Thedford ran for three touchdowns and threw for two with Carter Anderson on the receiving end of both.
Burwell will next host Palmer on Friday (9/19) and Sandhills/Thedford, now 1-2 on the season, will go on the road next Friday to face Bayard
