The Broken Bow track team is preparing for the start of the track season. The track team is once again under the direction this season of head coach Ryan Wetovick. Wetovick took time to visit with KCNI/KBBN sports about the upcoming season. There are 64 student athletes on the team this year. When asked what he views as the strongest areas on the boys’ team entering the season, Wetovick said the pole vault as well as the shot put and discus.
“On the boys’ side, very strong in the pole vault with Coy Wardyn returning as the state runner up last year. Also, on the boys’ side, very strong in the throws again. We did lose some horses there between Max (Denson), Evan (Cyboron), and Brice (Chaplin) but we still have Cal (Wells) and Drew (Ellis) that have really stepped up and threw very good distances last year but weren’t able to compete as much because we could only take three so now it’s kind of their turn to shine.”
For the girls, Wetovick said the shot put and discus should be strong as well as the hurdles and mid to long distance.
“On the girls’ side, really feel confident in our girls’ throws with Janae (Marten) and Keelyn (Shea) both returning state qualifiers. We have a lot of girls pushing them as well. Ida Bumgarner is an incoming freshman who’s had some big throws in middle school so we are anxious to see what she can do this year. Our middle distance and distance crew should be fairly strong. We return all the girls from our state qualifying 4×800 meter relay. Also return Klarissa Dowdy who is a returning state qualifier in the hurdles so we really look for some big things out of those girls.”
Broken Bow begins its season on Friday March 28th when they travel to the Aurora Invite. Other notable dates on the schedule this season include the Bow Invite on Friday April 11th. The Southwest Conference track and field championships are scheduled for Saturday May 3rd and the team will return to Aurora on May 13th for the Class B-5 district track championships.
