The Broken Bow Spirit 18U softball team split a double header against Cozad 18U on Thursday night, sending their record to 4-6 on the season.
Cozad took game one by a score of 8-2, despite having less hits than the Spirit. The game was tied at two at the end of the first inning, but Broken Bow failed to plate a run as Cozad scored six unanswered, two in the second inning and four in the third.
Ruby Russell, Ida Bumgarner, and Lily Thornton each had two hits to lead Broken Bow, with Russell and Bumgarner tallying the teams only RBIs.
On the mound, Lily Thornton pitched four innings, giving up eight hits and eight runs while striking out four and walking four.
Game two of the double header was a different story, with the bats coming alive for Broken Bow out of the gate. The Spirit never trailed in what ended as a 10-4 victory.
Ida Bumgarner provided a spark for the Spirit offensively, reaching base on two doubles and a single. Broken Bow scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning on six hits, proving to be too much for Cozad who could only muster four runs in the final half inning of the game.
Ruby Russell, Ida Bumgarner, and Skylar Smith all had two RBIs in the victory and eight players on the roster secured a hit in the game.
The Spirit will be back in action against Central Select on Friday before playing at the Kearney Klassic Tournament this weekend.
