The Broken Bow Spirit 18U softball team hosted DCB (Dannebrog/Cairo/Boelus) for a doubleheader Thursday night at Tyke Arnold field. The Spirit edged DCB in game one 5-2. The game was tied 2-2 going to the bottom of the fifth. Broken Bow scored three runs in what would be their final at bat due to time limit to claim the win. Lily Thornton was strong in the circle giving up two runs on six hits and striking out five. Thornton was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored and 2 RBI. Ida Bumgarner was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Ruby Russell had a multi-hit game finishing 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. In game two, Broken Bow sent 13 batters to the plate in their first at bat and scored nine runs on their way to a 14-2 win in three innings. Ida Bumgarner picked up the win in the circle giving up two runs on four hits and striking out three. Alexis Pflaster was 2 for 2 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Lily Thornton was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and Hallie Meyer had a multi-hit game finishing 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Spirit are now 12-14 on the season.
The Spirit of the Sandhills Summer shootout softball tournament begins Friday. The Spirit 18U team will begin play Friday night when they face Western Nebraska Chaos at 7:05 at the Melham Softball Complex on Field #2.
Broken Bow will have two teams in the 10U division. The Spirit Blue will open play Saturday morning at 10:10 against the Cozad Classics. The Spirit White will open play Saturday morning at 8 against the Hastings Bombers. All 10U games will take place at Tyke Arnold Field at Tomahawk Park.
The Broken Bow 14U team will open play Friday against the Cozad Classics at 6 p.m. at the Melham Softball Complex.
