The Broken Bow Spirit 18U softball team finished 3-2 at the Nebraska USA District Softball Tournament in Grand Island this past weekend. Broken Bow finished fourth overall in the 10-team bracket and qualified for the state tournament in Hastings which will take place in July. The Spirit will compete in the Class D Nebraska USA Girls Fast Pitch Tournament July 10-12 in Hastings.
Friday – Spirit 11, Fearless-Holm 18U 2
Broken Bow opened tournament play against Fearless-Holm 18U on Friday. The Spirit
scored eleven runs on six hits in an 11-2 win. Ida Bumgarner and Skylar Smith each went 2 for 3 at the plate. Lily Thornton was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Alexis Pflaster was 1 for 3 with a double, one run scored, and one run batted in. Lily Thornton threw a complete game in the circle giving up two runs on three hits and striking out six.
Saturday – GI Voyagers 15U Hubl 7, Spirit 6
The Spirit opened the day on Saturday with a tough 7-6 loss to the GI Voyagers. Broken Bow led 6-4 going to the sixth inning but the Voyagers scored three runs in the top of the sixth to come back and secure a one run victory. Lily Thornton was 2 for 3 at the plate with two triples. Ruby Russell finished 2 for 4 with one run scored and Anslee Campbell had a multi-hit game finishing 2 for 3 with a double and one run scored.
Saturday – Spirit 6, DCB 16U 4
The Spirit defeated DCB 16U on Saturday. Broken Bow led 6-3 after four innings and held on for 6-4 win. Alexis Pflaster was 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored and Skylar Smith had a multi-hit game finishing 2 for 2 with a double. Lily Thornton picked up the win in the circle throwing a complete game giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out three.
Saturday – Spirit 3, Cozad Classics White 18U 1
The Spirit concluded play on Saturday with a win over Cozad Classics White 18U. Broken
Bow led 2-1 after the first inning then added another run in the third and held on for a 3-1 win. Lily Thornton was outstanding in the circle giving up just one run on six hits and striking out four. Ruby Russell, Alexis Pflaster, and Lily Thornton each went 2 for 3 at the plate and Skylar Smith was 2 for 2 to help lead the Spirit offense.
Sunday – GI Voyagers 15U Hubl 6, Spirit 3
After falling to the GI Voyagers 7-6 on Saturday, the Spirit faced them again on Sunday. The game was tied 3-3 going to the seventh inning. The Voyagers broke the tie with three runs in the top of the 7th and held on for a 6-3 win. Ida Bumgarner hit a solo homerun for the Spirit in the bottom of the second inning and finished the game 2 for 2 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored.
