The Broken Bow Spirit 18U softball team competed in the Class D state tournament over the weekend in Hastings. The Spirit finished 3-2 for the tournament.
Broken Bow opened play on Friday with a 6-3 win over the Nebraska Quakes 16U 6-3. On Saturday, Broken Bow fell to Ponca 8-6 but then came back with an 8-3 win over Palmyra.
Broken Bow opened its day Sunday with an 11-2 win over the Hartington Penguins 18U. Lily Thornton and Laney Holcomb were strong in the circle. Thornton threw 3 innings surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits and striking out one. Holcomb threw 2 perfect innings allowing no walks, no runs, and no hits while striking out two. Thornton and Holcomb also had big games at the plate as each finished 2 for 3. Thornton drove in three runs and scored a run. Lila Griffiths was a perfect 3 for 3 in the game with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI and Cassidy Schweitzer was a perfect 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.
The Bow Spirit then advanced to face the Eagles 18U. The Spirit held a 3-2 lead after the first inning but would not score again as the Eagles pulled away for an 8-3 win to end the Spirit’s tournament run. Ida Bumgarner helped lead the way offensively for the Spirit finishing 2 for 3.
The Spirit end the season with an overall record of 24-26-1.
