Broken Bow Seniors Advance to Winner’s Bracket with Opening Day Win at Area Tournament

The Broken Bow American Legion Seniors baseball team advanced to the winner’s bracket of the B6 area tournament with a 5-1 over Louisville/Weeping Water Friday evening at Paul Brown Field. Coy Wardyn delivered an outstanding starting pitching performance. Wardyn pitched into the 7th giving up one run on two hits and struck out three while throwing just 60 pitches for the game. Carter Hall came on in relief to close the game. Broken Bow had just two hits in the game but they were run producing hits as Kayden Record delivered an RBI single in the second inning and Max Denson delivered a double with the bases loaded to drive in two runs in the fifth. Broken Bow added two insurance runs in the sixth to help secure the win.

In other action from day one at the B6 area tournament, top seed Holdrege defeated #6 seed O’Neill 9-0 on the eight run rule after five innings.  Holdrege outhit O’Neill 8-3 and used a six run 2nd inning to pull away.  Elijah Bergstrom finished 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.  Chance Bailey was 1 for 1 with 2 walks and 2 RBI.  Nick Taylor and Nicholas Weides combined for a three hit shutout on the mound.

McCook defeated Minden 7-2. A five run first inning set the tone for McCook who picked up their 16th win of the season. Ollie Corbett was 2 for 3 at the plate with a homerun to lead the McCook offense. Trey Tiller pitched a complete game for the win giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 4.

Noon – Louisville/Weeping Water vs O’Neill (elimination game)
3 pm – Holdrege vs Minden (a must win for Minden to stay alive)
6 pm – McCook vs Broken Bow (winner’s bracket)
