BROKEN BOW- The Post 126 Broken Bow Juniors and Seniors hosted the Gothenburg Melons at Paul Brown Field on Tuesday night.
In the Juniors game, both teams tallied a score in the first inning to get the night started. Broken Bow’s score came on a Brice Chaplin sacrifice fly ball that brought Owen Hartman across the plate after tagging up on 3rd.
Gothenburg didn’t wait long to take back the lead, bringing a run in at the top of the second inning. It wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth that Broken Bow knotted things up again when Brice Chaplin scored on a wild pitch.
After a scoreless fifth, Gothenburg brought their bats to the top of the sixth inning where they scored in a variety of ways including a fielder’s choice, an error, and a double.
The Bow Juniors were only able to bring in one more run the rest of the way, resulting in a 3-6 loss, putting them one game above .500 at 10-9 on the season. Max Denson, Isaac O’Brien, Tate Thorton, and Kayden Record each tallied a hit on the night for the Juniors, with Chaplin and Record each earning an RBI as well. Base running was aggressive from Post 126, with six stolen on the night.
The Broken Bow Juniors will be in action next on Thursday, hosting the AIA Juniors.
Mother Nature had something to say about the completion of the Seniors game with some spits of rain in the area, but a final score of 4-3 in favor of Gothenburg was able to be put in the books.
After a scoreless first, Gothenburg got the scoring started in the second with a run before adding two more in the third to make it a 3-0 lead for the Melons. Broken Bow would respond in the third with Eli Coble scoring to make it a 3-1 deficit for Bow.
Each team scored another run in the fourth, before Broken Bow was able to force just the second zero of the night on the scoreboard for Gothenburg in the fifth. They took advantage, chipping away in the bottom of the 5th by scoring Max Denson on a Coy Wardyn single. It was a 4-3 Gothenburg lead heading to the sixth.
Broken Bow was able to force another scoreless inning on defense, but were unable to score themselves stranding two on base.
The seventh inning started out strong for Broken Bow, with Hagen Campbell striking out the first batter to step into the box. The Bow defense tossed out the second batter at first after a chopper to shortstop. Gothenburg was able to quickly do some damage with the next two batters however, after two walks and wild pitches resulted in runners on the corners. Campbell rallied, striking out the next batter to prevent damage on the scoreboard.
Broken Bow came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh still trailing 3-4. Bow was able to make things interesting as Coy Wardyn was able to advance to second base on a wild pitch with two outs. Gothenburg was able to make their 4-3 lead from the fifth inning a final score with a strikeout to end the game.
The Bow Seniors tallied eight hits to Gothenburg’s three, but were unable to outscore the Melons, falling to 5-13 on the season. Eli Coble went three for four while scoring a run and knocking in an RBI. Max Denson went one for three, also tallying a run and an RBI. Caden Holm took the loss on the mound for Post 126, where he went for four innings, giving up four runs (three of them earned) on two hits, striking out nine and walking eight.
Next up for the Broken Bow Seniors is a home game against Post 135 Adams Bank & Trust on Thursday.
