The Broken Bow girls and boys wrestling teams will begin their seasons this week.

This is the inaugural year for the Broken Bow girls wrestling program following school board approval to add the sport to the Broken Bow athletic program for this season. The team consists of eight girls and is under the direction of coach Marissa Campbell and assistant Ryan Jones. Visiting during the Broken Bow Athletic Booster Club Winter Sports Tip Off, coach Campbell talked about the support they have received in getting this program started.

“It’s been absolutely surreal the amount of support we’ve had from other coaches, parents, admin, it’s been incredible.”

Coach Jones said there will be some things to work through during this opening year of the program but the team is ready for the season to begin.

“There’s going to be a few hiccups but it’s to be expected.  Every thing is new.  We have new girls.  This is going to be kind of a new process to them that they’re going to have to learn as well but in the end I think we are going to do awesome.”

The Broken Bow girls wrestling team begins its season on Friday when they compete at the Cozad tournament.

Ed Schaaf enters his 17th season as Broken Bow head wrestling coach.  Broken Bow placed third at state duals last season in Class C and finished as the Class C state runner up at the state tournament last season.  The Indians are poised to be a contender again this season.  Coach Schaaf visited with KCNI/KBBN sports about this year’s team.

“People have asked me, “How are you going to be this year?”.  I said we’re going to be different but we’re still going to be good.  We do have some dudes.  We have some guys that are going to have a chance to be on the medal stand, at the top of the medal stand on Saturday (at the state tournament).  Then we have some younger guys that are good that have bided their time and now they’re getting their opportunity to come in or they’re getting thrusted into you’re going to be a starter for us, you’re going to be a varsity guy and understand what it means to be a Broken Bow varsity guy…They’ve been taking on the challenge.  They’ve been working hard in practice…They’ve been banging heads pretty hard in practice.”

Broken Bow opens its season tonight when they travel to Arcadia for a triangular with Arcadia/Loup City and Wood River.  Broken Bow will host the Bow Invite on Saturday at the Broken Bow High School gym.
