As the Broken Bow track teams compete in their first meet of the season today,  Ryan Wetovick enters what will now be his final season as head coach of the Broken Bow track program after recently announcing he has accepted a position with Kearney Public Schools for the next school year.  Wetovick took time to visit with KCNI/KBBN sports about the move.

“So next year I’ll be teaching at Northeast Elementary in Kearney, which is part of Kearney Public Schools. And I’ll be assistant football coach and assistant track coach. So it was an opportunity that kind of came about. Went through the a short quick interview process and was offered.  A lot of long hard discussions my wife and I had  telling our kids because very well rooted here in Broken Bow but it just felt right this time to decide to make that move. My wife’s from Kearney, so it’ll be a chance for us to get a little closer to home and just like Broken Bow, you know, great school, great facility. Kearney offers all those same things as well, just, you know, bigger platform. So it was just something that I felt like at this time in my career would be a good move for me and my family and we decided to make the jump.”

Wetovick has served as a head coach and assistant coach for multiple sports during his time at Broken Bow.  He said working with student athletes and watching them succeed has been one of the most rewarding aspects of his time at Broken Bow schools.

“There’s nothing better than seeing kids reach or exceed their potential. A big thing I always like to say is, I’m not here to coach you on effort, right? I’m not going to pry that effort out of you. You give me that effort and I’ll get you to where you need to go. A lot of our kids here bought into that. There’s so many individual successes that I can name of when kids have done something where they’ve exceeded that expectation and you just see that look on their face and they’re like, man, I did that and it’s just a great, great feeling.”

The Broken Bow girls and boys track teams start their season today at the Aurora track and field invite.
