Boys State Wrestling – Championship Saturday Area Recap – Kraus of Mullen State Champion / Wells of Broken Bow State Runner Up

The NSAA boys state wrestling championships came to their conclusion Saturday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. Broken Bow’s Cobe Wells wrestled for the Class C 175 lb. championship against undefeated and defending state champion Alex Meinecke.  Meinecke was able to hold off Wells during the match and collect a major decision win (13-3).  Wells ends his outstanding season with a 43-5 record and a state runner-up finish.  Wells was one of three state medalists for the Indians. Braxon Rynearson was the sixth place medalist at 150 lbs. in Class C and Devon Baum was the sixth place medalist at 285 lbs.

Jason Kraus of Mullen wrestled for the Class D 157 lb. championship. Kraus faced Kolton Thoene of Burwell for the title.  It was a thrilling match that went to the ultimate tie breaker to determine the winner.  In the top position, Kraus was able to ride out the 30 second period to win the title.  The Mullen junior ends the season at 41-5.  Thoene was one of three Burwell wrestlers who qualified for the finals.  Brody Jensen claimed the state title at 132 lbs. and Drew Dawe claimed the state title at 138 for the Longhorns.  Burwell finished as the state runner up in the Class D team standings behind state team champion Plainview.

Mullen had two other medal winners at the tournament. Tate Kvanvig of Mullen faced Wyatt Stieb of Arcadia/Loup City for the third place medal in Class D at 215 lbs. It was the second time the two wrestled in the tournament with Kvanvig winning the previous match in the quarterfinals with a takedown in overtime. The second matchup was just as entertaining with Kvanvig winning the third place medal with a 10-7 decision win. Stieb would take home the fourth place medal for the Rebels. Mullen’s Bo Pettit Jr. claimed the fifth place medal with an 8-3 decision win over Carter Trambly of Franklin in the medal match.

Twin Loup’s Cazen Smith collected the fourth place medal at 157 lbs. in Class D. Smith faced Austin Pelster of Homer in the third place medal match with Pelster winning by an 8-6 decision.

Jackson Christen of Anselmo-Merna capped off his tournament run with a fifth place finish. Christen was impressive in his fifth place medal match winning by fall over David Bryner of Wauneta-Palisade.

In other area notes from the tournament, Cozad sent two wrestlers to the state finals.  Wyatt Hueftle finished as the runner-up at 106 lbs. in Class C and Drake Hasbrouck claimed the 144 lb. state championship.

Gothenburg put two wrestlers on the Class C medal stand. Maddox Gilligan was fifth at 138 lbs. and Tristan Koch was sixth at 175.
