Area Teams Begin Winter Sports Season Today

Several area winter sports teams will begin their seasons today.  The Broken Bow basketball teams will tip off their season tonight as they host Arcadia/Loup City for a girls and boys basketball doubleheader.  The Broken Bow girls basketball team is preseason ranked in Class C1 by the Omaha World Herald.  The Lady Indians are ranked #7 by the publication.  Broken Bow finished 22-5 last season and qualified for the girls state basketball tournament for the second consecutive year.  Kelly Cooksley enters his sixth season as head coach.  He told KCNI/KBBN sports that he is excited about the potential of this year’s team.

 

The Broken Bow boys basketball team is looking to improve on its 7-15 record from a year ago.  Coach Nate Olson is in his seventh year as Broken Bow head coach.  Broken Bow has some holes to fill this season due to graduation and injuries but coach “O” believes this year’s team is up to the challenge. He said the keys to success will be building team chemistry and being strong defensively.

 

Tonight’s games between Broken Bow and Arcadia/Loup City will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  The girls varsity game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow.

The Broken Bow wrestling team begins its season today as they travel to Wood River for a triangular with Wood River and Arcadia/Loup City.  Ed Schaaf enters his 15th season as  Broken Bow head wrestling coach.  After competing in Class B last season, the Indians will compete in Class C this season.  Coach Schaaf told Central Nebraska’s Sports Source that while they lost some high quality wrestlers from last year’s team due to graduation they have reloaded and plan to put a high quality team on the mat again this season.
