Area sports competition heats up ahead of new year

Several basketball and wrestling teams are in competition leading up to the beginning of the new year, fresh off of the holiday break.

Monday area results

Ansley/Litchfield and Burwell began play at the Central Valley Holiday Basketball Tournament in Greeley on Monday. In the 11 AM girls matchup to start the day of competition, Ansley/Litchfield fell in a tight matchup with Stuart 39-43. They will play for third place on Tuesday. The Spartan boys fell to Stuart as well by a score of 23-68 and will also compete for third place on Tuesday. In the final two games of the day in Greeley, Burwell went 0-2 against Central Valley with the girls falling 29-69 and the boys 26-63.

Burwell and Ansley/Litchfield will play in the girls consolation at 11 AM on Tuesday (12/30), followed by the boys at 12:30. Central Valley and Stuart will play for each championship at 2:15 and 3:45 respectively.

The Twin Loup girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Hershey for the Greg Miller Memorial Holiday Tournaments, each facing Red Cloud to open competition. The girls fell 30-58, while the boys came away victorious 65-57.

The Twin Loup girls will face Lexington in the third place game at Noon on Tuesday, followed by the Twin Loup boys at 1:30 PM in the championship game against Hershey, who defeated Lexington 63-38.

The Arcadia/Loup City girls and boys went to the Elm Creek Holiday Tournament and each faced Bertrand. The girls came away victorious 34-21, while the boys fell by a score of 51-62.

The Rebel boys will play against Gibbon in the boys consolation at 12:45 on Tuesday, while the girls will face Elm Creek at 2:30 in the championship. Elm Creek will play Bertrand for the boys championship at 4:15 to round out the tournament.

Tuesday and just beyond

Broken Bow opens play at the Boone Central Holiday Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. The boys team is the #3 seed and will face #2 Alliance at 5 PM, while the girls are the #1 seed and will face Alliance at 6:30 PM. Boone Central and Adams Central are the other teams competing in each bracket.
