Area Football – South Loup at Sandhills Valley on KBBN

Sandhills Valley will host South Loup tonight in area high school football. South Loup, the sports co-op between Arnold and Callaway, is off to a 2-1 start this season. The Bobcats opened the season with wins over Hemingford in week one (54-36) and Hi-Line in week two (34-15). South Loup will try to bounce back this week after falling to Perkins County last Friday 40-12. Head coach Mat Jagelar took time to visit with KCNI/KBBN sports this week.  When asked what the focus has been in practice this week, coach Jag said consistency and eliminating mistakes.

“Just eliminating our big mistakes.  Just trying to get through that.  We are trying to start the game better.  Our first three games we didn’t start the game very well.  So we are trying to work on that to get a better start in the first quarter and those first two drives.  Trying to make sure we get everybody aligned where we need to be defensively and know our blocking schemes.  Just the normal stuff.”

Sandhills Valley, the sports co-op between Stapleton and McPherson County, is off to a 1-2 start this season.  After winning their season opener against Mullen, the Mavericks fell to Perkins County in week two and lost to Bridgeport by 12 last week in a game that saw the teams combine for 116 points.  Head coach Luke Connell shared with KCNI/KBBN sports where he has seen the most improvement since the beginning of the season.

“Our offensive line has really gotten a lot better this year.  It’s been a blessing.  Leyton (QB) will tell you he’s not running for his life quite as much so that’s pretty exciting for him.  It’s actually been allowing us to sustain our offense a little bit.  I’d probably just say the line on both sides has shown improvement.”

Tonight’s game will take place at Stapleton and will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  Coverage begins with the Consolidated Pregame Show at 6 p.m. followed by the kickoff at 7.
