Area Football Preview – Mullen vs Maywood Hayes Center on KBBN / Broken Bow vs Ogallala on KCNI

It’s week two of the Nebraska high school football season. Tonight’s 8 man area game of the week on KBBN will feature the Mullen Broncos. The Broncos are looking to bounce back after a season opening loss to Sandhills Valley in week one. Mullen head coach Wade Marsh visited with Central Nebraska’s Sports Source this week and said one of the strengths of this year’s team is their athleticism.

“I’d say we’re a pretty athletic team, we don’t have a lot of size we only have one kid over 200 lbs. this year which is kind of crazy.  We don’t have a lot of size but I think we’re quicker up front.  We’ve got some kids that pretty tough up front and are athletes.  I think our backfield is pretty athletic.  Justin French is coming back, third year starting running back, pretty athletic kid.  Tate Kvanvig is a big kid.  He’s 6’3″ – 6’4″ 225 at fullback and then Alex Werner and Cayden Hampton at end.  We move Alex around a little bit, a really explosive kid probably one of the more explosive kids we’ve had since Lane Edis was around here I would say.  We’re athletic across the board, not quite as big but sometimes that’s not a bad problem to have.”

Mullen will play their home opener tonight when they host Maywood Hayes Center who enters at 1-0 following a 19-18 win over Wilcox Hildreth last week.  Tonight’s game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  Coverage begins with the Consolidated pregame show at 6 with the kickoff to follow later in the evening at 7:30 central time.

The Broken Bow Indians will play their home opener tonight when they host Ogallala at Mark Russell Field.  Both teams will be looking to bounce back after falling in their season opener a week ago.  Broken Bow head coach Carlie Wells visited with KCNI/KBBN sports this week and said he was pleased with the effort that was given last week and says the team has responded well in practice.

“I thought our kids went out there and played hard.  We had good effort just made some mental mistakes that slowed us down and hurt us at a few key times.  Practice this week has been good.  We’ve seen great effort, they’ve been physical, they’ve been upbeat.  I think we’re making progress.  We have a lot of young kids that are learning and they say you make a lot of progress from your first game to the second and we’re hoping our kids take what they see on film and learn and grow from there and get better this week.”

Tonight’s Broken Bow / Ogallala game will be broadcast on KCNI 96.3 FM and kcni1280.com.  Coverage begins with the Custer Federal State Bank pregame show at 6 p.m. with kickoff scheduled for 7.
