It’s week three of the Nebraska high school football season. In the 8 man area game of the week, Sandhills/Thedford travels to face Burwell. The Knights are off to a 2-0 start after holding off Ainsworth last week 56-54. Coach Tyson Cox visited with KCNI/KBBN sports this week. Sandhills/Thedford has put up some big rushing numbers through two games but have also made plays through the air. Coach Cox talked about the development of their passing game this season.
“Yeah. We have some pretty good athletes to throw the ball to this year. We had Carson Cooksley last year who was always a threat to throw to and Maurice Robinson is back and is healthy. He’s just a big body kid who has great hands. Him and Kyle (QB) have a pretty good relationship and they just get the ball on him.”
Burwell is 1-1 this season after opening the year with a 24-20 win over Elgin Public Pope John but then fell to St. Mary’s of O’Neill last week. Head coach Luke Gideon said he has been pleased with determination and effort his team has shown to start the season.
“You know I just think that just our ability to play hard, just hang in there. Our kids, they want to win. For the last 10-15 years we won a lot over here and these kids have seen that. That’s where they want to get and I think it’s just their effort. As long as they give good effort we always give ourselves a chance.”
Tonight’s game between Burwell and Sandhills/Thedford will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com. Coverage begins with the Consolidated pregame show at 6 and kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Broken Bow travels to St. Paul tonight. Both teams are looking for their first win of the season. The Indians fell just short in their home opener last week falling to Ogallala 28-26. Head coach Carlie Wells visited with Central Nebraska’s Sports Source this week and said he was pleased with the improvement he saw last week.
“Yeah, we felt like we played better. Had the opportunity to win. We did some better things up front. Defensively they gave us some fits with what they run but we still had opportunities there to get stops. We have a young team and a lot of new faces so our kids each week are learning and I think we’ll learn again and get better.”
