Area Football Playoff Preview

The round of 16 in the NSAA state football playoffs takes place today across the state.  Broken Bow will make its third straight playoff appearance tonight when they host Douglas County West at Mark Russell Field.  Broken Bow’s last playoff win came in 2013 when they defeated Grand Island Central Catholic.  The Indians qualified for the playoffs with a 6-3 overall record.  Broken Bow will look to bounce back from two tight losses to end the regular season.  Coach Carlie Wells visited with KCNI/KBBN sports about tonight’s matchup and bouncing back.  Wells said that they have reflected on what their goals were at the beginning of the season and talked about them still being achievable.

“We just reflected back on our goals.  One of their goals was to make the playoffs.  Another goal was to win some games in the playoffs…We told them our goals are in tact and that we just have to remain focused and keep building and things will turn around.  We just had some unfortunate things in those two losses.  We’ll just continue to work on getting better and prepare for DC West”

Douglas County West enters tonight’s playoff game at 7-2 with their two losses coming to Boone Central and Wahoo.  The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the state quarterfinals and face the winner of Wahoo vs Columbus Scotus.  Tonight’s game between Broken Bow and DC West will be broadcast on KCNI 96.3 FM and kcni1280.com.  Pregame coverage begins at 6:30.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7.

South Loup will face Lawrence Nelson in the 2nd round of the D2 state playoffs today.  South Loup advanced with an opening round over Ansley/Litchfield while Lawrence Nelson got past Elgin Public Pope John.  South Loup head coach Mat Jagelar visited with KCNI/KBBN Sports about today’s matchup.  Jagelar talked about the keys to South Loup moving forward in the playoffs.

“For one it’s based on defensive alignment. Make sure we’re aligned every time.  We got to be in the right spots.  It’s not so much what they’re going to do but to put ourselves in a spot to have success.  And then special teams.  We have to work on special teams.  We have to take care of the ball too.  We can’t have silly mistakes.  We have to eliminate those little mistakes we make and we’ve been trying to work on that every week.”

The South Loup / Lawrence Nelson playoff game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
