Area Cowboys and Cowgirls Compete at Madison for Nebraska High School Rodeo

Area cowboys and cowgirls competed at Madison over the weekend for Nebraska high school rodeo. The first rodeo competition on Saturday saw Cayson Johnston of Stapleton win the boys all around title. Johnston’s day was highlighted by a third place finish in the steer wrestling competition and a top five finish in the team roping where he teamed with Hayes Hammond of Valentine to finish third. Other area highlights on Saturday saw Cooper Phillips of Burwell win the tie down roping with a time of 12.4 seconds. Runner-up finishes included Spencer DeNaeyer of Seneca in the barebacks, Emily Leach of Dunning in the breakaway roping, and Emma Pearson of Broken Bow in the girls cutting.

On Sunday, Coy Johnston of Stapleton was the boys all around champion. Johnston won the steer wrestling with a time of 5.11 seconds and finished third overall in the tie down roping. Other area highlights on Sunday included Emma Pearson of Broken Bow winning the girls cutting with a score of 71 points. Runner-up finishes included Anna Clark of Thedford in the barrels, Whitney Jennings of Seneca in the breakaway roping and girls cutting.
