Area Athletes Qualify for Class D State Track Championships

Several area athletes competed at the D-8 district track and field championships in Paxton on Wednesday.  Elm Creek was the girls team champion with 135 points.  Overton was runner up with 73 points followed by Mullen in third with 52.  Paxton was 4th with 51 points and Sandhills/Thedford was fifth in the girls standings with 48.  Overton was the boys team champion with 97 points followed by Mullen in second with 74 points.  Ansley/Litchfield was third with 56 points followed by Sandhills Valley in fourth with 52 and Elm Creek was fifth with 50 points.

Among the area highlights, Peyton Paxton of Mullen was district champion in both the girls 3200 and 1600 to qualify for state in both events. Chase Gracey of Mullen was district champion in both the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Kyle Finney of Mullen won both the boys 3200 and 1600 meter runs to qualify for state. The Mullen team of Justin French, Chase Gracey, Brandon Hardin, and Alex Werner won the boys 4×400 meter relay to qualify for state. Cohen Rohde of SEM was district champion in the boys discus and is headed to state. Rohde also qualified for state in the boys shot put based on his district performance. Taryn Arbuthnot of SEM won the girls high jump and was also an automatic state qualifier in the girls long jump where she finished 2nd. Arbuthnot also qualified for the girls 200 based on time. Isaac O’Brien of Ansley/Litchfield was the district champion in the boys 800 meter run and Harper Andersen of Mullen was champion in the girls 800. Sandhills Valley qualified for state in the boys 4×800 as the team of Colin Rooney, Leyton Connell, Cameron Berliner, and Isaac Goosey posted the winning time. Coby Higgins of Sandhills/Thedford was the district champion in the boys triple jump and also qualified for state in the boys 110 meter hurdles based on time.

State qualifiers for Twin Loup included:
