Anselmo-Merna Girls Basketball Headed to State – District Finals Area Recap
Anselmo-Merna D2-8 district champs

The Anselmo-Merna girls basketball team punched its ticket to the state tournament Friday night by claiming the D2-8 district championship at North Platte St. Pat’s.  The Lady Coyotes faced Leyton for the district title.  Anselmo-Merna led 39-32 going into the fourth quarter and held on for a 45-42 win handing Leyton just its third loss of the season.  AM had two players finish in double figures led by Rhianen Myers with 13 and Makenna Miller finished with 12.  Leyton’s leading scorer, Zaili Benish who averaged 30.7 points per game, was held to just nine points.  With the win, Anselmo-Merna improves to 20-5 and will make its seventh appearance at the girls state basketball tournament and first since qualifying in 2022.  The Lady Coyotes will open play in the Class D2 state tournament on Thursday (3/6) in Lincoln.

The Broken Bow girls basketball team saw its season come to an end Friday night in Columbus falling to Scotus Central Catholic 47-30 in the C1-6 district final.  It was a tough night offensively for the Lady Indians who trailed 24-8 at halftime and 34-15 after three quarters.  Bow tried to fight back scoring 15 points in the 4th quarter but the deficit was too much to overcome as Scotus picked up its 21st win of the season and advances to the state tournament next week.  Broken Bow was led in scoring by two of their three seniors.  Janae Marten finished with a team high nine points and Gaby Staples had eight.  Broken Bow concludes the season at 18-7.

The Mullen Lady Broncos fell short in their bid to qualify for the state tournament falling to Wilcox-Hildreth in the D2-5 district final at Maxwell.   Mullen led 13-9 after the first quarter but scored just eight total points from that point on as Wilcox-Hildreth pulled away in the second half for a 40-21 win.  Mullen concludes the season at 19-3.
