As practice officially begins today for high school fall sports in Nebraska, members of the Broken Bow girls golf team have been busy this summer playing competitive golf to help prepare themselves for the upcoming season. Broken Bow has won the last three NSAA Class C girls state golf team championships and are focused in on claiming their fourth this season as four of the five members from last year’s championship team return.
Broken Bow senior Camryn Johnson, who finished 2nd in the individual standings at the Class C state tournament last year, had the tremendous honor of qualifying for and competing in the Optimist International Tournament which was played at Trump National Doral Golf Club which is located in the heart of Miami near Coral Gables and Key Biscayne and is home to four of the top championship golf courses in Florida.
The tournament was affected by adverse weather conditions but in spite of that, Johnson told KCNI/KBBN sports that it was an amazing experience.
Johnson finished in the top 60 of a field that included around 150 participants. Johnson talked about how she has grown as a golfer especially in tournament play.
“I’d definitely say I’ve learned a lot of leadership skills trying to help my teammates help them push me and I push them. Competitive golf is so up and down I think one of my best strengths right now is just my mental side of the game where I can just if you have a bad day you just bounce back and try to have a good one”
Broken Bow girls head golf coach Kelly Cooksley told KCNI/KBBN sports that playing competitive golf during the summer has helped set their program apart the past few years. Along with Johnson, Cooksley also praised the accomplishments of others during the summer.
Broken Bow is scheduled to open its season on August 24th at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney
