BROKEN BOW–The yearly tradition continues in celebrating the creativity of Custer County’s youngest artists. The Young Children’s Art Show will feature dozens of pieces of artwork and will be on display at the Broken Bow Public Library (626 S D St, Broken Bow, NE 68822) during the month of April. The art show is free and open to the public during regular library hours.

The annual Week of the Young Child (WOYC) celebrates early learning, young children, their teachers, and families and will be held held April 1-7, 2023.

Heather Schmidt of Love & Learn Childcare in Broken Bow told KCNI/KBBN the WOYC is an opportunity for families and childcare providers to focus on the importance of early childhood education and development such as growing a child’s individuality and imagination.

“For this area, it’s really focused on the importance of early childhood education and just celebrating young children in general,” Schmidt said.

“For the past few years we’ve been celebrating with a children’s art show and we just focus on preschool programs and other childcare programs. Support places like Early Head Start and Sixpence will also have their families do things with their children,” Schmidt continued.

She added, “Just celebrating their [young kids’] creativity and them as individuals–looking at what they can do in their imagination through artwork.”

The Week of the Young Child will also be highlighted with the “WILD about KIDS” kids fair at the Broken Bow Schools Activity Building on Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free for families.

The Custer County Early Childhood community recognizes the immense growth that takes place in children between the ages of 0-3, 0-5, and 0-8 years old. Developmental growth during these stages help lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later in life.

“All of those brain connections are being made from birth to three. So the more connections you can build and really enforce is key in having success in school, success in life, and just building a good educational foundation,” Schmidt told KCNI/KBBN.

This month is also a time to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
