Valley County Sheriff insurance fraud case reaches plea agreement

ORD- Valley County Sheriff Casey Hurlburt and the state have agreed to a plea agreement in Valley County District Court. Documents that were submitted were agreed to in court on Wednesday.

According to court documents, in exchange for a guilty or no contest plea to amended charges, Hurlburt agreed to surrender his law enforcement license. Hurlburt and the State also jointly recommended a sentence of a fine, with the State not seeking jail or probation.

Hurlburt’s charge was amended from fraudulent insurance act of $1,500 to $5,000 (Class IV felony) to attempt of a class IV felony (Class I misdemeanor).

Hurlburt was arrested in October last year by the Nebraska State Patrol.

Court documents state Hurlburt provided false information regarding an insurance claim that was submitted on January 24, 2023.

The claim that Hurlburt submitted claimed that an accident involving a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo took place on October 11, 2022 rather than the actual date of the accident, which was March 23, 2022 in order to have the repair costs covered by way of full insurance coverage obtained on April 25, 2022.
