Custer County Youth Sports (CCYS) is set to host their first ever fund raising event, an all-ages fun-run/walk/bike around Melham Park in Broken Bow.
The starting gun for the CCYS Turkey Trot will sound at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, November 26. Check-in for the race starts at 3:15. Runners will have 1 mile and 5k routes available. Organizer Chelsey Gillespie spoke with KCNI/KBBN about the event, and the Youth Sports organization.
“It is up at Melham,” Gillespie told the Get Up and Go Morning Show. “The one mile is going to probably just be one lap around the park. To get to your 5K, it’s going to be three laps. We’re trying to keep it all in one location versus out on the road so we don’t have littles crossing roads. You’ll be running around the baseball fields, down by Brookstone, and down by the hospital, just kind of going around the park.
Prizes will be given to runners placing first in the 5k, as well as for 6-8th grade 1-Mile runners and Kindergarten-5th grade 1-Mile runners. Costumes for the pre-turkey day run are strongly encouraged, with a prize to be awarded to the most festive costume at the race.
“We want you to dress up so there is an award for best costume,” said Gillespie. “It’s just supposed to be fun. Get outside, have fun, move your body. “
Entry Fees for the race are $10 for adults 18 and up and $5 for students K-12th grades. Children 5 and under can run or ride their bike in the race for free.

The CCYS organization seeks to provide opportunities for youth across Custer County to participate in a wide variety of sports activities from soccer to bowling, and even an axe-throwing league.
Parent volunteers are always being sought to help with the sports activities as well.
“Anytime that we have any of those events going on, parent involvement is huge,” said Gillespie. “Either it’s being a chaperon with bowling and axe throwing, just kind of hanging around helping those folks be able to control that chaos is huge. When it comes to soccer season we’re going to need coaches to coach those little kids and all those different teams. We are still currently looking for board members from outside of Broken Bow. So Merna, Sargent, Ansley, any of the other towns in Custer County.
Pre-registration for the Turkey Trot on November 26 is encouraged, but racers can register at any point up to the 3:15 PM check-in time. More information about this event, and other activities the Custer County Youth Sports organization supports can be found on the CCYS Facebook Page.
