Tobias & Spanel/Curtis farms receive awards for a century of family farming

BROKEN BOW – The tail end of the Custer County Fair is always marked with celebration, but this year more than usual for a handful of county farmers.

The Tobias and Spanel/Curtis family farms each received a Pioneer Farm Award from the Asksarben Foundation and the Nebraska Farm Bureau.

The awards recognize family farming operations that have remained in the same family’s hands for a century; the Spanel/Curtis farm has just hit that milestone, whereas the Tobias Family Farm has just celebrated its 140th anniversary of unbroken ownership.

The two family operations each received a plaque for their generations of work as well as a gatepost marker in recognition. The pair of farms join an impressive list of family-owned operations to receive the award in the county; according to the Aksarben Foundation’s registry, Custer County operations and individuals have been honored 196 times with the award.
