Tim Chancellor Resigns From Broken Bow School Board

The Broken Bow Board of Education held its regular meeting on
Monday evening, June 16, at the North Park Elementary School.

All members were present except Tim Chancellor, who recently submitted his resignation. Chancellor no longer lives in the School District and, therefore, can not continue to serve on the Board. Chancellor wrote a letter to the Board indicating how much he enjoyed working with the members and thanked them for their cooperation and service to the district.

Superintendent Darren Tobey told the board members they have 45 days to appoint a new person to fill the vacant seat. The person who accepts the appointment will serve out Chancellor’s term, and then they would have an option of running or not running for election.

Board Treasurer Amy Staples provided May’s cash summary, reporting just over 3 million in revenue and 1 million in expenditures. Staples said the figures are typical for the time of the year. However, Staples and Superintendent Tobey took time to identify some spending out of the general fund for smaller construction-related projects that were not part of the bond. The Board members unanimously approved the Treasurers and Claims Reports.

Superintendent Tobey highlighted some district accolades, including a list of Broken Bow athletes who recently participated in various All-Star games. Check out past sports stories on www.sandhillsexpress for all the names and details. Broken Bow head volleyball coach Skylar Morris will also serve as assistant coach in the 41st NCA all-star game, scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, at Lincoln North Star High School.

Tobey told the Board that Summer School started Monday, June 16, at North Park Elementary. He was happy to report that 22 of 25 registered students attended classes on the first day. Classes will be held for one week in June, one week in July, and one week in August instead of three consecutive weeks as it has been in past summers. Tobey said the change was made to allow parents and kids to fit in more summer activities together.

During Administrator Comments, Mr. Tobey said there have been discussions about a new name for the Middle School since its primary function will be Arts, Music, and Performance. The idea to rename the Middle School to the AMP building came from Morgan Harms, Broken Bow HS/MS Vocal Music Teacher. Tobey asked the Board members to ask for input and expect a follow-up conversation at the next meeting.

Progress continues on the new additions and renovations. More paint, another punch list, and sealing concrete in the new shop are all in the works. Mr. Tobey said the fire marshal will be here on Wednesday, June 18. “Hopefully, everything will go well. Then, the new office area and entryway will be handed over to us, and we can utilize that office space. The high school inside has been completely demolished. If you open the shop door on the south side, you can look all the way through the front of the building. The walls are all tore out. It’s completely open. A lot of work’sbeen done.”

Jr. High Girls Wrestling will start next school year. Tobey said the girl’s season will begin after Christmas. Jeff Ellis, Assistant MS/HS Principal-Activities Director, will announce Coaching assignments and provide more details at the next meeting.

Superintendent Toby recommended that Board members study Policy #5001, which addresses student absenteeism, and plan to consider options at the next work session. The Board approved 11 other Policy Reviews that were on the agenda.

The Board unanimously approved the purchase of a new Science Curriculum for 175,950.80.

The Board scheduled a work session for July 7 at noon. And set the regular meeting for July 21 at 6:00 pm. The locations will depend on construction progress and will be announced.
