The Great Cookie Contest: 1st Place Karoline Ogle and 2nd Place Valerie Blakeman
Eight cookie recipes were entered into last week's Great Cookie Contest at the Broken Bow Library

BROKEN BOW—Eight highly skilled bakers are warmed up and ready for the holiday baking season following the Broken Bow Public Library’s Great Cookie Contest on November 22. A panel of cookie experts rated the treats on Texture, Taste, Richness, and Eye-Appeal.

Entries included a variety of chocolate chip creations, frosted sugar cookies, Almond Joy cookies, weiner kibbles or ‘snowball cookies’ made by the youngest baker in the contest Emma Blaser, white chocolate/cranberry cookies, and ginger snaps with frosting.

Judges Sarah Hansen, Stephanie Grafel, and Emily Barnett agreed to rate the cookies—a task that might have proved to be a bite more than they could chew if the cookies were not all so delicious! It was a close race, but sometimes that’s just how the cookie crumbles.

With a margin of just one point, the winner was 13-year-old Karoline Ogle with Sheree’s Outrageous Chocolate Chip Cookies and second place went to Valerie Blakeman with her Christmas themed frosted sugar cookies!

Ogle said she has made the recipe before but this time around accidentally altered the recipe—but obviously it worked in her favor!

“The funny thing is I accidentally messed up the recipe! I used baking powder instead of baking soda,” Ogle laughed.

Blakeman told KCNI/KBBN she loves to bake for the holidays and share with neighbors. Her son Jaxon helped her too.

“It’s an old family recipe. I enjoy baking a lot at the holidays. I guess over the years you learn what pan to put them on, how much milk to add in your cookies, make sure you get the right amount of flour and the frosting–that’s always difficult too!”
