Student-led Chili Cook-off and Raffle to Benefit Healing Hearts and Families Thursday

For the 4th year running, Broken Bow High School Junior Kaytee Crawford is organizing a Chili Cook-off Fundraiser in support of Healing Hearts and Families. The benefit and contest will take place at the Broken Bow Public Library at 6:00 PM, Thursday, January 29.

According to BBPS Language Arts Instructor Shawna Schweitzer, the chili competition started as an 8th-grade project headed by Crawford and another student.

“When she [Crawford] was in eighth grade, I had a class where they had to think of a solution to a problem,” said Schweitzer. “Another student at the time decided to raise awareness for something with counseling. I told them, well, you should do it for Healing Hearts and Families, and they wanted to do a chili cook-off to raise money for Healing Hearts and Families in town. We’ve done it for a few years now, and we always seem to get at least $200 to $300 for Healing Hearts and Families.”

New this year, the Chili Cook-off will also feature a raffle for attendees to enter as the main fund-raising event. Tickets for the raffle are only $1.00 each, with no limit to the number of tickets that can be purchased. Potential raffle prizes are valued from $30 – $100. For those who simply want to donate to a great cause, a free will donation will also be accepted.

The chilies will be judged in two categories. A People’s Choice Award will be presented based on the votes of the attending soup samplers. Crawford has also arranged for a panel of judges to select a Judge’s Pick winner. Prizes will be presented to each winning chili.

To enter a chili in the cook-off, register with the Broken Bow Public Library by calling 308-872-2927, or register in person at the library front desk. Signing-up to enter a chili in the contest is free.

Schweitzer noted there was a possibility that the evening may also feature cinnamon rolls to complete the mid-west classic meal.

Following the cook-off, attendees are invited to continue the fellowship with board games at the library. With dinner and an evening’s entertainment sorted, Thursday evening’s Chili Cook-off, benefiting Healing Hearts and Families, is sure to be an event not to be missed.
