Stay Safe and Sound: Essential Winter Safety Tips

BROKEN BOW – Winter season is here, and it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to snow events.

City Administrator David Schmidt reminded KCNI/KBBN of what to do in the event of a snow emergency.

“When we do have a significant snow event when the city is in the process of removing snow if you can get your vehicles off of the street, it is very much appreciated. We do understand that it is not always possible, but in cases where that can be done, it just makes it easier for us to do a good job,” said Schmidt.  “If your street has been cleared, please do not push your snow into the street. Just be safe out there. That’s our goal is to get the streets clear so everybody can move about safely.”

In the case that a snow emergency does happen,  City Ordinance 981 states –  When the Mayor proclaims a Snow Emergency, no parking is allowed on these streets until the snow emergency is lifted:

Emergency Snow Routes:

  • 9th Avenue from North N Street south to Memorial Drive
  • 10th Avenue from North B Street north to North K Street
  • 5th Avenue from South N Street to Memorial Drive
  • Memorial Drive from East City Limits to West City Limits

If you do need to drive in the snow or yucky weather in general, you are welcome to follow these tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Be sure to fill your vehicle up with fuel. If you were to get stuck, its best to plan ahead and have a full fuel tank so you can keep your vehicle running and stay warm.
  • Don’t run your engine and heater constantly to help avoid running out of gas. Don’t use things like lights or the radio without the engine running so the battery doesn’t stop working.
  • Start the car and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour. Keep the exhaust pipe clear so fumes won’t back up in the car.
  • Pay attention to the weather. There are many ways you can follow the weather such as watching the news, using a weather application on your phone, and even 511.
  • Don’t follow other vehicles too closely. Sudden stops are difficult on snowy roadways, do not use cruise control when driving in winter weather, and do not pass snow plows.
