The Broken Bow Board of Education met in regular session on Monday Evening, July 20. Board President Tom Osmond called the meeting to order at 6:04 PM in the board conference room in the Broken Bow Middle School – High School building.
Amy Staples was the only member of the School Board not present for Monday evening’s meeting. At the end of the meeting, the Board accepted Staples’ resignation from the School Board, as she has moved out of the district area. The announcement of the open position will be formally placed in the Custer County Chief, with notice also being provided to the County.
To start the meeting, the School Board discussed the past month’s fiances in the Treasurer’s and Claims report. Board Treasurer Jennifer Jackson noted income of just more than $692,000 against expenditures of just over $1.1 Million.
Among the charges discussed was a higher than average cost for fuel at $8,100. Superintendent Darren Tobey noted the increase was due to school vehicles actually getting more use than normal during the month of June, with a number of sports camps and activities conferences, as well as the overall increase in gas prices affecting anyone who drives at the moment.
In District Accolades, Tobey called out the recent success of the Broken Bow FBLA program at their national conference, including a 10th place showing out of 120 teams for the Introduction to Business Presentation team of Keeley Moninger, Tristan Taylor, and Tylee Fenton.
More accolades were received by the school overall during the recent class reunions. Board Member Pam Holcomb stated many many of the former students complemented the updates that the school has recently undergone during tours put on by the school.
Continuing to wrap up those facility updates, Tobey noted landscaping activities will soon be taking place around the areas disturbed by construction. Much of the work will be carried out by students and Career and Technical Education classes over the summer and fall, using materials sourced from The Garden Center in Broken Bow.
In Action Items, the School Board re-approved 15 existing policies, and two new policies covering financial details required by state legislative updates, as well as providing a mechanism for parents to review books checked out from the school libraries. The approved policies can be found with the School Board Agenda.
Updated fees for school lunches, technology fees, and an increase in substitute teacher pay for the 2026 – 2027 school year, and a tuition increase for New Discovery Pre-School for the 2027-2028 school year were also approved.
The hiring Jeff Neujar was approved by the Board. Neujar will teach 6th – 8th Grade science in the upcoming school year.
With no further business before the Broken Bow School Board, the meeting adjourned at 6:50 PM. There will be no working meeting in August. Instead, Tobey will host a series of community meetings and tours on August 13, 14 and 17, with more details on times and locations to be announced. The next regular meeting of the Broken Bow Board of Education will be at 6:00 PM on August 17. Looking further ahead, public tax and budget hearings are currently scheduled to coincide with the 12:00 PM Working Session on Monday, September 8.
