Slick roads blamed for pair of Custer County rollover accidents, no injuries reported

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office says slippery road conditions from low temperatures and fog are to blame for a pair of rollover crashes that took place in Custer County this week in Ansley and on the Callaway Road. Neither accident resulted in injury.

The first rollover occurred on the morning of Christmas Eve just before 9 AM, when a pickup truck driven by a Broken Bow man drove off of Highway 2 in Ansley near the intersection of Drive 452.

After striking a curb, the truck rotated 180 degrees, struck a stop sign, and rolled over once back onto its wheels. The driver stated he lost control of the vehicle due to icy conditions. No injuries were reported and the scene was cleared just after 10 AM Tuesday.

A second rollover took place on Thursday just after 5:30 AM on Callaway Road near Road 429, when a westbound SUV driven by a Broken Bow man lost traction when the brakes were applied due to heavy fog and below freezing temperatures. The driver reported seeing a shadow, believing it could be a deer approaching

After spinning out the vehicle entered the south ditch where it struck the embankment and overturned once, coming to rest upright. The driver did not immediately report the accident due to a language barrier. The accident was reported by a motorist about an hour later, resulting in contact being made with the driver later in the morning.

Patchy fog conditions are expected to continue in the KCNI/KBBN listening area into Thursday night. Forecasts show nighttime temperatures dipping into the lower 30s and upper 20s the rest of the week, warming up into the 50s during the day. A high chance of rain and/or snow is in the forecast for Monday and Monday night.
