School House Hits the Road, Joins the Big Red Barn at Sandhills Byway Visitor Center Tuesday

Travelers on Highway 2 between Merna and Broken Bow may see something unusual around mid-dayTuesday.

Tuesday, November 18 is the date set to move the one-room Moroney Schoolhouse building from its current site about three miles north of Merna to its new home on the grounds of the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway Visitor Center just east of Broken Bow.

The school building will travel along Highway 2 south from Merna, through Broken Bow, to its new location.

The schoolhouse itself was donated by the Dave Lamb Family. As reported in August, Howard Gaffney helped facilitate the acquisition and move along with Mike Evans and Rick Maas who coordinates volunteer activities at the Visitor Center. Actually moving the building will be accomplished by Star House Moving out of Grant, NE

Once the school is on site in its new location, work will continue on restoration of the building, and fitting out with period-authentic furniture and school supplies.

In the meantime, moving a building along a busy highway is a major undertaking, with Maas and others in communication with a variety of government agencies and utilities. Motorists are advised to be on the look out and take appropriate cautions if they find themselves in traffic with a school house.
