School Board Move Tax and Budget Hearings to September 30th

The Broken Bow Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday, September 16, at the Broken Bow Public Library. All board members were present.

School Board President Tom Osmond called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. After the minutes of the previous meeting were approved, J.B. Atkins reviewed the Treasurers’ and Claims reports, which the board members unanimously approved.

Broken Bow School Superintendent Darren Tobey highlighted district accolades. Mr. Tobey reported that sports are well underway, as they started at the regular time, and students are now beginning to get into the groove with other activities that started later. Broken Bow School hosted an invitational Cross-Country meet this past Saturday. Mr. Tobey thanked all the staff and volunteers who worked to make the meet successful.

During the Administrator’s comments, Superintendent Tobey said the construction and renovation project is on schedule to this point. Tobey said having students in a smaller space is not convenient, but it is what they planned for, and it works. He noted that when events occur, people may experience some congestion and parking challenges. Tobey said that if construction and renovation stay on schedule, the last day they can use the main gym will be February 10, 2025. The target for moving back in is September 2025.

Under discussion and action items, the board discussed details included in the tax and budget hearings but delayed a vote until the September 30 work session due to publication requirements. The meeting will be held at noon at the Broken Bow Library and open to the public.

North Park Principal Malachi Behrens updated the board members on the Network for Educators Effectiveness (NEE), an overview tool for teacher evaluations. Mr. Behrens said this is the first year the school will implement this system. Berhens and the High School/ Middle School Principal, Dan Helberg have spearheaded the project. Administrators can record observations and feedback directly into the online evaluation system during classroom walkthroughs. Berhens said they are just starting and have much to learn, but he believes it will be very beneficial for students, teachers, and the administration.

Again, the board of education work session meeting, which will include votes on the proposed budget and tax request, will be held at noon on September 30 in the Broken Bow Library. The next regular meeting was set for October 21 at 6:00 p.m.
