The Sargent Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is inviting the public to support two former first responders at a benefit meal Saturday night (September 21) starting at 6 PM in the Sargent Community Center.
All proceeds from the event will be given to Bill and Margaret Divine. Bill was injured in a work-related accident and is currently receiving treatment at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. He served on the Sargent Fire Department for over 20 years, while his wife served as a first responder and EMT for 16 years.

Gerry Sheets, a member of the Sargent Fire Department, said that the two are always quick to lend a helping hand themselves, “Bill and Margaret give all their time, as much as possible, they were both born and raised in the area, raised their family in the Sargent area. They have been serving on the fire department and ambulance service for over 23 years. They will give their time and energy to any cause they can to help somebody else.”
At a cost of $20 for adults and $10 for kids 10 and under, visitors to Saturday’s event can enjoy a mountain oyster meal that includes beans, macaroni salad, tea, and water. Fish and ham will be additional options.
In addition to the meal, a cash bar will be available throughout the night, and card playing will start up after the meal at 8 PM. A gun safe and pistol have also been donated to assist in the evening of fundraising.
Those who can’t make it to Saturday’s event that want to help Bill and Margaret can make checks out to them and take them to First National Bank in Sargent, send them to the fire department at PO Box 206, Sargent, NE 68874, or mail them directly to Margaret in Sargent.
