Recap of Custer County Supervisors meeting on February 27th

The Custer County Supervisors met on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, for their regular meeting. The Supervisors discussed and approved an update for the Custer County Title VI Program Implementation Plan and 504/ADA Policy Assurances. With the approval, the county will remain in compliance with federal guidelines for major projects such as a major bridge project south of Comstock.

Howard Ballenger spoke to the Supervisors on behalf of the Prairie Pioneer Senior Center in Broken Bow. Ballenger asked the board for their financial support to help the Center continue to provide services to the community. The Prairie Pioneer Senior Center was brought to life by community members through private donations and opened in 1980. Today, the Center is partially funded by the South Central Area on Aging and funding through the Older Americans Act helps provide noon meals and keep the Center running. However, Ballenger stressed that due to increased costs, even with grants and fundraisers, the Center is struggling financially. The Supervisors appreciated the information provided by Ballenger and they will hold further discussion and reach an eventual decision.

A discussion was held concerning possible changes to the Death Benefits Policy in the Employee Handbook.  After looking at two options submitted by the Personnel Committee, the Supervisors tabled the issue for further discussion.

Five bids from dealers were opened and reviewed for a new pickup to replace the oldest of the Custer County Sheriff’s fleet. Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond was present to provide his input and to answer questions.  Supervisors voted to approve the bid of $42,650 for a 2024 Dodge Ram SSV from Gateway Motors/Sandhills Motors in Broken Bow.  The pickup needing replaced will not be traded in, leaving the option open to sell it to the Custer County Roads Department.
