Recap of Custer County Court Criminal Cases on December 19th

A few criminal cases came before Judge Karin Noakes who presided over Custer County District Court on Thursday, December 19th.

Adam J. Schaefer, age 30 of Broken Bow, appeared for arraignment on two charges—Count I, intentional child abuse resulting in injury (a Class II felony) and Count II, false reporting (a Class I misdemeanor).  The charges are a result of Schaefer’s arrest on September 29th after his 15-day-old baby was hospitalized with severe injuries. Schaefer pleaded not guilty to both charges and Judge Noakes set a jury trial for February 3, 2025. A pretrial conference in the case will be held on January 16, 2025.

Carsen W. Wilson, age 19 of Broken Bow, appeared for a bond review hearing. Wilson faces 15 felony charges stemming from an incident that occurred in Merna on October 2nd. Wilson’s bond in the case had been $1,000,000 with a 10% privilege. During Thursday’s hearing, the State informed the court that an agreement had been reached with the defendant to reduce the bond to $250,000 with a 10% privilege and specific conditions. Judge Noakes approved the bond reduction, with the conditions.

Adrienne M. Jenkins, age 33 of Broken Bow, appeared for arraignment in her case that stemmed from an incident in September of this year. The State said a plea agreement had been reached in the case. Jenkins then pleaded no contest to 3rd degree domestic assault, a Class I misdemeanor. As part of the plea agreement, two other charges were dismissed. A presentence investigation was ordered by Judge Noakes and sentencing is scheduled for March 20, 2025.

Appearing in court for sentencing was Cortney J. Alspaugh, age 35 of Broken Bow. In September, Alspaugh was found guilty of making terroristic threats, a Class IIIA felony. After reviewing the presentence investigation report, Judge Noakes sentenced Alspaugh to three years’ probation.

Also appearing in court for a competency review was Steven A. Olson, age 72 of Broken Bow. After reviewing the latest report from Health and Human Services, hearing from the State, and hearing from the defendant’s attorney, Judge Noakes dismissed the case.
