BROKEN BOW – The VFW Pancake feed was on Monday and along with tasty pancakes was a presentation for two veterans who received Quilts of Valor.  The Quilt of Valor recipients included Roger Carroll and Rock Jones.

From Teri Buhlmann’s biographies presented at the VFW Pancake Feed:

“Lynn Roger Carroll enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June of 1963 immediately following his high school graduation. Carroll did his boot camp training at Camp Pendleton, California where he received the Leatherneck Shooting Award and graduated as a Private First Class. Carroll’s singing voice earned him a spot in the Marine Corps Choir where he toured the Great Lakes area, stopping to perform in 18 cities. The remainder of Carroll’s tour of duty was at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Carroll served aboard a ship for one month during the Santo Domingo Crisis. After four years of service, Roger Carroll  was honorably discharged in June of 1968 as a Sergent.”

“Dennis (Rock) Jones from Gregory, South Dakota was drafted into the United States Army in August of 1968. This was after Jones had obtained his college degree and had been teaching for two years. Jones took his basic training and AIT and Fort Lewis, Washington. From Washington, Jones was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia for additional infantry training before going to Vietnam in May of 1969. On July 12, 1969, Jones incurred injuries that would take him to Denver, Colorado. There he spent nine months recovering at Fitzsimons Hospital. Rock Jones received an honorable discharge in April of 1970.”

According to qovf.org, a quilt of valor may be awarded to a Service Member or Veteran known to you who has been touched by war. A QOV may be awarded in a presentation case but is not required. These quilts are meant to be used and are not just for looks.
