Public invited to annual pie, ice cream social in Broken Bow

The Custer County Historical Society is inviting community members to enjoy an evening of dessert, conversation, and local history during its annual Pie and Ice Cream Social tonight (June 5) at the Custer County Museum on the square in Broken Bow.

From 5:30 until 7:30 PM, guests can enjoy a slice of pie topped with ice cream in exchange for a free will donation. Proceeds will support the museum’s mission of preserving Custer County history.

In addition to pie and ice cream, a continuous slide show will be playing featuring photos of rural schoolhouses from across the county. Images span decades and the show is expected to spark memories and conversations between those who attended school or community events at the buildings.

Tammy Hendrickson said the gathering is about more than just dessert.

“Pie and ice cream is social. So pies of all sorts and the socialization, the conversation. Conversing back and forth or storytelling across the table or different things like that,” said Hendrickson.

A special quilt created in advance of the county’s upcoming 150th anniversary celebration will be on display, featuring blocks representing school districts throughout the county.

Hendrickson said the event will be held rain or shine, as there is plenty of indoor seating at the museum. Those who can’t stay are welcome to take pie to go.

The Custer County Museum is open throughout the year, with summer hours of Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM.
