Prairie Pioneer Senior Center will have a Burger Bash on Friday

BROKEN BOW- The Prairie Pioneer Senior Center will have a Burger Bash fundraiser on Friday, July 19.

The fundraiser will be sponsored by and held at Grocery Kart in Broken Bow. It will go on from 4 to 7 p.m. Burgers, chips, and drinks will be served all for a free-will donation.

The Prairie Pioneer Senior Center provides in-house meals, home delivered meals, puzzles, cards, games and more. In-house meals are provided Monday through Friday from 11:30  to 1 and home delivered meals are delivered from 11 to noon.

In 2024 the center served an average of 940 meals per month. They started off the year serving about 700 meals per month. Now, half way through the year, they are serving almost 1,000 meals per month. They suggest, for meal donations for people over 60, $6.50 for in-house meals and $6.75 for delivered meals. The cost for those under 60 is $7.25.

The Prairie Pioneer Senior Center is not government funded, so they do not receive monetary help from the state or city. The center is partially funded by South Central Nebraska Area Agency on Aging. The funding is through the Older Americans Act to help pay for meals and to keep the senior center running. They also receive 70 cents per eligible meal through the Nutrition Senior Incentive Program. These funds, however, only cover about 40% of the costs to keep the center open and running. The other 60% comes from participants’ contributions, fundraisers, and from other sources.

If you are unable attend the Burger Bash but would still like to help, you can contact Cathy Larson at the center at (308) 872-6121. They accept monetary donations, donations of fresh produce and eggs, and volunteer help in the kitchen. Feel free to join them any time for good food and even better people.
