Several schools in the KCNI/KBBN listening area have been affected by a data breach of PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) information including social security numbers (SSN) and medical information. The company became aware of the incident on December 28, 2024 and beginning on January 7 began communicating with customers to support them going forward.
As of Thursday (January 16) schools in the area that have communicated publicly that they were affected in some way by the information breach are Burwell, Sargent, Stapleton, and Sumner-Eddyville-Miller.
According to PowerSchool, districts and schools that do not utilize PowerSchool SIS were not affected and no evidence exists to suggest that other products form the company were affected.
Parents and guardians who want to know if their school was involved are encouraged to reach out to their school directly. PowerSchool stated that they are taking steps to set up a system to provide supportive resources for those whose data may have been involved.
