Nebraska Extension in Custer County has announced that Summer June Jamboree youth activities have been scheduled and that registration is encouraged. The activities are open to any youth and 4-H enrollment is not required to participate.
To register for any of the following activities, contact the Nebraska Extension – Custer County office at 431 South 10th Avenue Broken Bow, NE 68822, located in the lower level of the Custer County Courthouse. All fees must accompany registrations and checks should be made out to ‘University of Nebraska-Lincoln’.
Adventures in the Forest will be held on Tuesday, June 10 at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Boys and girls ages 8-18, before January 1, 2025, are invited to attend. Come explore the world of forestry. Learn about the parts of the tree and how they work together for a tree to survive. Youth will also learn about diseases and pests that can harm trees. Youth will have a finished cross section display, a 4-H project after the workshop. 4-H project entry *D320-006. Pre-registration and payment are required by June 2. The cost of the workshop is $20 per person. Instructors for this workshop will be David Lott, UNL Horticulturist; Sarah Fanning, UNL 4-H Educator; and Charmayne Popp, Summer 4-H Staff.
String Art Workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. Youth in grades 4th-12th, in Fall of 2025 are invited to attend. Create a fun and creative piece of art that reflects your personality! Youth will create a string art project using wood, nails, and colorful string. This project is fun and easy and can be entered into Class C257013 Accessory – 3D. Pre-registration and payment is required by June 10. The cost of the workshop is $20 per person. Instructors for this workshop will be Sarah Fanning, UNL 4-H Educator; and Charmayne Popp, Summer 4-H Staff.
Clover Kid College will be held on Thursday, June 19, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. Clover Kids, 4-H age before January 1st of 5-7 years old are invited to attend. Join us for a fun morning filled with activities that will engage youth and explore a variety of topics from agriculture, science, and art! Clover Kids will leave with a snack and a completed Clover Kid fair project! Pre-registration and payment is required by June 12. The registration fee is $10 per person. Donut Day! will be held Friday, June 20, 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken. This workshop is for boys and girls ages 10-18. Every day is a great day for a donut! Join us to learn how to make healthier donut options that can be exhibited at fair in Cooking 201! Pre-registration and payment is required by June 13. The registration fee is $15.00. Instructors for this workshop will be Kayla Hinrichs, UNL Food, Nutrition, & Health Educator; Sarah Fanning, UNL 4-H Educator; and Charmayne Popp, 4-H Summer Staff.
4-Patch Pillow Workshop will be held Monday, June 23, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken. This workshop is for boys and girls ages 9 and above. Youth will learn basic sewing techniques and create a 4-patch pillow that can be entered into fair. The registration fee is $20.00. Participants are each asked to bring: their own sewing machine if you have it, suggested sewing tools, fabric, and matching thread. Fabric quantities: 1/3 yard each of two contrasting woven fabrics, 44-45” wide (pre-wash fabric). Suggested sewing tools to bring: sewing machine (due to the large amount of sewing and colors of thread used, participants will be unable to share sewing machines), thread to match fabric, pin cushion, seam gauge, seam ripper, rotary cutter, and ruler. Some of these materials will be available to share but if you have them, please bring them. If you cannot provide your own sewing machine, we have a very limited number to borrow. Please let us know if you will need one.
4-H Modeling Workshop will be held Wednesday, June 25, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church, West Memorial Drive in Broken Bow. Youth will have fun learning how to write narratives for the fashion show, learning how to model your 4-H garment to reflect the words in your narrative, and learn how to choose accessories for your 4-H garment. Participants will learn from the 2024 State Fair 4-H Stylists. Everyone is welcome to this FREE workshop! Even if you are not taking a clothing project this year, but you might in the future, feel free to come! This will be a great time to get questions answered and to practice modeling in the church where the fashion show judging and the public fashion show will be held.
