Mid-States Rodeo contract discussions continue at Ag Society board meeting

BROKEN BOW, NE – The Custer County Ag Society began their regular meeting just after 7:00 PM Thursday night.

A large portion of the meeting was spent with the board discussing various pieces of an updated contract for the Mid-States Rodeo with rodeo representative Jason Schnorr. Discussions between the Ag Society and Mid-States were spurred by an issue with the number of complimentary gate passes.

Other issues brought up in the conversation were stalls having water dumped in them at the end of the event leaving it muddy for future users, accurate wood shaving amounts and who should supply them, the cost of the big screen and whether it makes sense without obtaining grant money, manure being dumped in several places it doesn’t belong by competitors, the need for horse boarding location rules to be followed, and the shooting sports building being left wide open and full of flies and beer cans.

Schnorr’s overall message was that the Mid-States Rodeo wants to make the situation better than it has been, including financials and the treatment of the grounds. No decision was made by the board but continued discussion will be happening between the two parties.

The board heard from a representative with Jones Insurance Group to discuss renewals. She stated that she was waiting on details with other companies, including deductible amounts, but wanted to get initial information to the board. General discussion by the board poked around the idea of the possible un-needed cost of insuring the grandstands, open air stall barn, concession and wash area, and Chuckwagon building. No decision was made.

NIRMA Insurance was also discussed by the board, with more questions needing to be asked before a potential multi-year contract is decided on.

Scotti Ross with Custer Economic Development appeared before the board regarding a utility easement needed for the connecting of two lift stations, which would require trenching. The board unanimously approved. The project was estimated to take place in late fall 2024 or early spring 2025.

Troy Walz with Nebraska Extension reported the fair premium books should be in hand this upcoming Monday.

The grounds management report indicated that the last two weekend’s events went well. The recent rainfall caused some flooding in building 6 and the shooting sports building, which was cleaned up. The water heater in the park bathroom was recently repaired. A list of camper spots for fair was estimated for a release next week.

Legislative candidate Tanya Storer also addressed the board and public in attendance regarding her campaign points, journey, and encouragement to vote in the primary and general elections.

The board adjourned at 8:41 PM.
